Learning Outcome Benchmarks For Primary Education

 

What every child should be able to do by the end of each primary class

 

CLASS Primary 1

 

LITERACY

Reading:

 

Use sounds and letters to read three-letter words, e.g. mat, car, bag, man, boy, cat, dog.

 

Writing:

Write up to 10 common three-letter words, e.g. mat, car, bag, big, dog, eye, pen.

 

Listening and Speaking:

Answer simple questions using one word answers.

 

Grammatical Accuracy:

Use articles “a” and “an” with common words.

 

NUMERACY —

 

Number and Numeration:

– Identify and count numbers 0-50 and recognise denominations of the Nigerian currency.

Calculation: Add and subtract single digit numbers.

Geometry: Recognise plane shapes.

Measurement: Compare and order the length, weight and capacity of different objects (e.g. longer, bigger, smaller than,,.,)

Statistics: Associate numbers 0-20 with groups of objects

 

 

CLASS | Primary 2

LITERACY Reading: – Read simple sentences and answer factual questions on them.

Writing: Write simple sentences using verbs and nouns

Listening and Speaking: Answer factual questions from simple passages/stories/rhymes read to them.

Use sounds and combination of letters to spell and pronounce . words.

Grammatical Accuracy:  Use regular plurals of nouns and the simple past and present  tense of common verbs.

 

NUMERACY

 

Number and Numeration: :

 

Identify, count, order and write numbers 1-200. ~

 

Calculation:

Add and subtract two-digit numbers without carrying or borrowing. Multiply single digit numbers up to 6×6.

 

Geometry:

Recognise 2 and 3 dimensional shapes.

Measurement: Recognise the hour and minute hands and tell time using “o’clock” and “half-past”. time. ;

 

Statistics:

Organise objects into groups of numbers 0-20 ‘

 

 

CLASS Primary 3

 

LITERACY Reading: . Read simple, short passages and answer questions on them.

Writing: Write three to four sentences on every day activities with full stops and capital letters correctly used.

Listening and Speaking: Make simple statements and respond to simple commands.

Grammatical Accuracy:

Use irregular plurals of nouns in speaking and writing.

 

NUMERACY

 

Number and Numeration:

Identify and write the value of each number in a 3-digit number (H T U).

Calculation: identify %, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5 and 1/6 of divided objects.

Find the factors of numbers up to 48.

 

Geometry: Draw and state properties of plane shapes.

 

Measurement: Measure length, weight and capacity (volume) using Standard units (metres, grams, litres,).

 

Statistics: Recognise information presented in simple charts. .

 

CLASS Primary 4

 

LITERACY

Reading: Read a simple story and say three things about one of the characters.

Writing: Write three or four sentences about an experience they have had in the correct sequence.

Listening and Speaking: : Take part in a simple conversation using appropriate words.

Grammatical Accuracy: Use the past, continuous, present and future tenses accurately. in speaking and writing.

 

NUMERACY

Number and Numeration:

Identify and write the value of each number in a 4-digit number (TH, H, T, U). Calculation: Choose the correct calculation to solve simple problems. Recognise links between decimals and fractions.

 

Geometry: Locate lines of symmetry in 2 dimensional shapes.

Measurement: : Record estimates and measurements in a table.

Statistics: Represent information in a bar graph.

 

 

 

CLASS Primary 5

 

LITERACY

Reading: Read a non-fiction passage and say three things they learned from it.

Writing: Write a short account of events or a simple story with at least one description and a clear beginning, middle and ending.

Listening and Speaking: Participate in structured dialogues that involve expression of ideas (giving opinions and asking questions).

Grammatical Accuracy and Spelling: Use simple adjectives and adverbs in speaking and writing. Arrange a list of words in alphabetical order, up to the third letter.

 

NUMERACY

Number and Numeration: Identify prime numbers (2, 3, 5, and 7) and other common number patterns from 0-100,

Calculation: . Use knowledge of the multiplication table to solve problems involving fractions, e.g., what is a third of 187 Solve simple problems involving time and money.

Geometry: , Calculate a missing angle in a given shape. Measurement: Apply simple formulae, e.g. LxB; 2(L+B) to calculate area and perimeter of 2 dimensional shapes.

Statistics: Answer questions using data presented in graphs and tables.

 

CLASS Primary 6

 

LITERACY

Reading:

Read a story and explain characters’ behaviours and predict their future actions.

 

Writing:

 

Write simple compositions that fit different purposes e.g. letters, accounts, descriptions, stories,poems.

 

Listening and Speaking:

Use the correct intonation to distinguish between commands, questions and statements

 

Grammatical Accuracy and Spelling:

Find words in a simple dictionary a or long list using their knowledge of alphabetical order.

 

NUMERACY

 

Number and Numeration: Find the lowest common multiple of numbers.

Order fractions using the signs greater than, less than. and equal to (>,<,=).

 

Calculation: Solve problems by identifying and completing calculations required.

 

Geometry:

Identify and measure different angles in 4 dimensionai shapes.

 

Measurement:

Choose and use standard metric units with decimal notation, e.g. 6.9. 1.3 metres. |

 

Statistics: Find the range, median, mean, and mode of sets of items.
