It’s a pity for this great nation Nigeria. A country full of wealth but yet the vast majority of her citizens suffer in serious hunger and abject poverty. A nation full of impractical leaders and unrealistic citizens.
Who are to blame and who are to be blamed? The leaders blame the followers while the followers blame the leaders. Everyone claims to be right. An adage says, “As the people are, so shall their leaders be”. The truth of this adage is verified in the social-economic and political situations of Nigeria. A country full of hypocrites and liars.
They sing “Nigeria, we hail thee” but their actions say “Nigeria, we hate thee”. They promise now and then “to be faithful, loyal and honest” but both the leaders and the followers are practically deceitful, unreliable and corrupt. What a shame! Hypocrisy of the highest order!
Everybody wishes Nigeria to be like countries overseas like America, United Kingdom, China and Saudi Arabia. However, can ordinary wishes take us anywhere. Do our characters support our wishes. Let’s see it objectively:
1. The Civil servant who steals public fund.
2. The security personnel who collects bribe at the detriment of national security.
3. The teacher who organizes special examination centers or give expo answers to students.
4. The parents who pay for exam malpractice for their children.
5. The students who practice exam malpractice to pass exams.
6. The lecturer who gives out grades for money or sex.
7. The Citizens who shunt queues and disobey traffic rules.
8. The Politicians who Embezzles Public Funds.
9. The Boss who give unmeritted favours to his subordinates on basis of religion, tribe, political and other social affiliations.
10. The merchants who hoard goods to create deliberate artificial scarcity.
11. The judges and lawyers who make ways for criminals to escape facing the wrath of the law.
12. The Doctors who refer their patients to private facilities for personal gains.
13. The engineers who construct below agreed standard facilities for personal gains.
14. The youths who believe that shady and fraudulent acts are the best ways of hustling struggling for wealth.
15. The common poor man who is praying and waiting for an opportunity to be in any of the above mentioned situation and do the same or even worse.
16. The Imam and pastors who are devil-incarnates engaging in fetish and immoralities.
17. The husbands and wives who had failed in their responsibilities as parents and heads of the family.
18. Husbands and wives who engage in extra-marital affairs, and are still prominent leaders in churches and mosques.
19. Youths whose lifestyle is adultery and fornication. They are openly proud to be gays and lesbians.
20. Protesting youths who burn government properties and burgle public offices.
Let’s think deeply about it and amend our ways if we sincerely wish that Nigeria become like the great countries of the world.
Solution is not by ordinary wish, prayer or protest. The solution and progress we hope for start with you and me. Hypocrisy and noise-making leads nowhere. Sincerity of purpose is what we need.
Apologies and kudos to the few great patriotic citizens of Nigeria who are sincere to their anthem and pledge. Your number may be too insignificant, your persistent drops of sweat will soon bear significant results for the nation.
